Obituary

Columbus, N.C. - Evangelena Linney Barber, 77 of Tribranch Farm, Columbus, NC died Saturday, December 13, 2014 in Greenville Memorial Hospital, Greenville, SC.Born in Hiddenite, NC, she was the daughter of the late Chauncey Depew and Mittie Ena Hill Linney. She was a graduate and valadictorian of Hiddenite High School and Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (today's UNC Greensboro). Later she became a Home Economics Agent for the Cooperative Extension Service in Polk County and a Home Economics and Family Consumer Science Teacher for Polk County Schools. She was a 4-H volunteer for 22 years, President of the NC Retired School Personnel, Polk County 2000-2014 and member of the Polk County Voluntary Farmland Preservation Committee. She was a member of the Columbus Presbyterian Church, Columbus, NC where she had served as an Elder for many years. Evangelena always stayed true to her High School motto "And departing, leave footprints in the sands of time".Surviving are: two sons, Robert Barber, Jr. of Columbus, NC and Chauncey Barber (Monica) of Mill Spring, NC; Two daughters, Linney B. Richards of Leconto, FL and Lucy Barber of Morganton, NC and nephews, Robert D. Barber (Robin) of Greenville, SC and John S. Barber (Kathy) of North Augusta, SC. Also surviving are 2 grandchildren, Chan Barber and Banks Barber as well as many relatives in Alexander and Iredell County, NC.Memorial services will be held 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2014 in the Columbus Presbyterian Church, Columbus, NC with Rev. Phil Dunford officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Fred Ashley Hall of Columbus Presbyterian Church.Memorials may be made to Little Mountain Scholarship, 438 Willow Creek Road, Leicester, NC 28748 which Mr. Barber established in memory of his late brother, Leonard Banks. The scholarship helps fund Western North Carolina high school graduates post-secondary education who desire to major in the agricultural field. Family and friends can also choose to make memorials to the Riddle Institute, P. O. Box 250, Morganton, NC 28680 or to a charity of your choice.
