MILL SPRING, NC - Etta Jane Lawter Ruff, 89, of Mill Spring, NC passed away Monday, July 6, 2009 in White Oak Manor Nursing Center in Tryon, NC. Born in Polk County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Dill and Daisey Ann Ruff Lawter and wife of the late Carol H. Ruff. She was a member of Coopers Gap Baptist Church in Mill Spring, NC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, James Willard Ruff, brothers, Buford Lawter and Ealey Owensby and a sister, Florence Ruff. Surviving are four daughters, Carolyn Dyer (Bill) of Mill Spring, NC, Helen Blackwell (Terry) of Charlotte, NC, Sue Thompson (David) of Columbus, NC and Betty Painter (Elmer) of Mill Spring, NC; one son, Paul Ruff of Mill Spring, NC; one sister, Addie Lee Wilson of Mill Spring, NC. Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2009 in Coopers Gap Baptist Church in Mill Spring, NC with Rev. Warren Elliott and Rev. Wayne Blackwood officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, NC. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC 28722. At other times, the family will be at the home of a daughter, Sue Thompson, 1203 Blanton Street, Columbus, NC.
