Esther Ann Ruff, 77, resident of Brookdale Charleston's Clare Bridge Memory Care Center, widow of Melvin H. Ruff passed away March 10, 2017.A native of Polk County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Elbert Simpson Burnette and Pearl Tallent Burnette.Ann and Melvin were married for 42 years. After he retired from the Air Force they lived in Pacolet, SC and then Bowman, SC where she was a member of the White House United Methodist Church. Ann retired from the SC Department of Transportation's Holly Hill Maintenance Engineering District 7. She was honored as the SCDOT Employee of the Year in 2001 for exceptional and meritorious service.Survivors include her children: Rita Dickson of Gaffney, SC; Jeff Ruff of Goose Creek, SC; and Cathy Ruff of North Charleston, SC; one brother, Bill Burnette of Columbus, NC; two sisters, Grace Gilbert of Asheville, NC and Myrtle Chapman of Abbeville, SC; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by three brothers James, Robert and Dean Burnette and one sister Mary Burnette Suber.A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, March 16, 2017 in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus NC with Dr. Chris Osborn officiating.Memorials in memory of Ann may be made to Piedmont Hospice 501 Deanna Lane, Wando, SC 29492.
