Columbus, NC - Jane Dunbar Halsted, 96, of Columbus, NC, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016.She was born to Robertson and Frances Tavenner Dunbar in Cleveland, Ohio in 1919. She graduated from the University of Michigan and married fellow student, Robert E. Halsted. They began their family in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to Jamestown in 1949. Jane was very involved in the charitable, civic, and church affairs of Jamestown: served as the President of the YMCA, President of the American Association of University Women, WCA Hospital fundraiser, and Head of the Allocations for the United Way for several years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was elected the first woman Elder and also served as Interim Director of Christian Education. She began the American Field Service (AFS) in Jamestown and hosted a Norwegian student for a year in her home. Jane was a member of Moon Brook Country Club and enjoyed the hobbies of painting and golf. In retirement the Halsteds moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina in 1986.She is fondly remembered by daughters: Marcia (Larry) Hanks of Raleigh, NC and Joan Halsted of Manlius, NY.She was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 2000, her grandson, David, in 2013, and her son David, in 2014.
