Hortense H. Stone, 96, of Tryon, died Thursday, March 22, 2007 at home.A native of Superior, Neb., she was the daughter of Roy and Minnie Henderson. Her formal education began in a one-room schoolhouse. After graduating from the University of Nebraska in 1930, she became a high school teacher in North Platte, Neb.In 1933, she married Dr. Millard Prewitt, and lived more than 30 years in Westchester County, N.Y. Her first husband died in 1961 and she remarried in 1962 to Howard A. Stone, who died in 1980 soon after the couple moved from Sarasota, Fla. to Tryon.She was accomplished at needlepoint and cooking. She was also an avid gardener, reader, crossword puzzle solver, bridge player and sports fan, as well as a homemaker. A member of the Tryon Congregational Church, she sang in the choir several years.Survivors include a brother, Philip Henderson of Lincoln, Neb.; a daughter, Anne Carlson of West Chatham, Mass.; sons, Richard Prewitt of Ossining, N.Y.; Eric Prewitt of Tryon; Dr. Paul Prewitt of Laguna Beach, Calif.; and stepsons, Thomas Stone of Cambridge, Mass.; William Stone, Cambridge; Richard Stone, Falls Village, Conn. and Kenneth Stone of Medford, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren.A private memorial service will be held at a future date.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Luke's Hospital, the Landrum Library and Parkinson's Disease research organizations.
