Edward Haley Huxley (Ned) Dick passed away on April 30, 2023 as a result of a recent fall at his home. Born February 9, 1948, Ned was the son of the late Margaret Huxley Dick and Robert Dick of Tryon.Ned attended Tryon Elementary School and Darlington School, Rome, Georgia. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with a BA degree in English in 1972.After graduation, WSPA Radio in Spartanburg employed Ned in the marketing and sales department. He ultimately went on to work for Milliken and Company where he spent the next 30 years of his career. His sales and marketing roles at Milliken led him to work in Spartanburg, Pickens, and New York City. Ned was charming, witty, and friendly, often with a sharp retort to any comment. He never met a stranger. These attributes made him particularly good at his profession.Ned was a member of the Well Dwellers, a group of eight elementary school aged boys who maintained a life-long devotion to one another. From campouts to long hikes, Ned was always there with a joke and a willing, can-do attitude.Ned loved the freedom of speed. This led him to a lifelong infatuation with automobiles - fast ones. He drove them all from Chryslers to Chevrolet Super Sports and from Porsches to BMWs. It also formed hislove of water and of all things boating, a love affair that began for Ned as a child attending Camp Sea Gull on the Neuse River of Eastern North Carolina. Throughout his life, Ned owned numerous powerboats that he piloted around local lakes, the Great Lakes, and along the Florida coast. Ned attended advanced watercraft and water-safety courses throughout his life.Ned was exceedingly generous with his family and friends. Known best as "Uncle Ned", he loved to entertain – throwing lavish dinner parties that rollicked on until the small hours of the morning as Ned held forth with colorful stories and hearty laughter. His larger-than-lifepersonality was matched only by his heart. Ned graciously supported the people and causes that he believed in. All who knew him, and many who never met him, benefited from his generosity.Ned was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross, the Republican Party, Tryon Riding and Hunt Club and Tryon Fine Arts Center among many others.In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the local charity of your choice, knowing that most likely Ned was a faithful contributor.Ned is survived by his sister Harriet Brown who resides at Tryon Estates; his nephew, Colin Ridley of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; his nieces Margaret Stephenson (Will) of Greenville and Elizabeth Cox (Matt) of Spartanburg; and three great-nieces.A memorial service will be held on May 27 at 11:00 AM at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross in Tryon, NC.
