Obituary
Dwight B.H. Smith Jr, 96, of Saluda N.C. died Wednesday March 13, 2025 at Lauralwoods Assisted Living, Columbus, N.C.
He was born February 10, 1929 in Lewison, Maine to the late Dwight B. H. and Charlotte Sawyer Smith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Patricia Anne Smith in 2005, one brother, Clifton Smith, and one sister, Glenys Palmer.
He is survived by two sons, David Smith of Zirconia, N.C. and Walter Smith (Christine) of Gilbert, AZ; and one daughter, Donna Kalesnick of Saluda, NC; two sisters, Natalie McCarthy of Lewiston, ME, and Althea Willey of Auburn, ME., three grandsons, Robert Herman (Tansey) of Gastonia, N.C., Jeffery Smith of Gilbert Az., and Jonathan Smith of Mesa Az.; two great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren.
Dwight graduated from Lewiston High School and went on to graduate from University of Maine, Orono. He served in the Marine Corp from 1952 – 1954 as a mapping topographer. He then worked as a civil engineer for his entire career, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Saluda Methodist Church. He also served on the board of directors of the Saluda Fire Department and was an active member of the community.
