Obituary
Donna Barker James, 94, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 31, 2024, at Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC. She was born January 10, 1930 in Richwood, Ohio, to Edward (Ed) and Margaret (Shoup) Barker.
After graduating New Carlisle High School as valedictorian in June of 1948, she enrolled in the Cadet Program in the College of Education at Bowling Green State University. The following year she became a teacher, sparking a thirty-three year career in education that included not only success as a 4th grade teacher, but a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and work in the district office. Donna loved her career as an educator, but her Christian faith and devotion to her family was most important to her.
Toward the end of 1955, Donna met Robert (Bob) James, the love of her life. Bob and Donna were married on May 27, 1956 until Bob's passing on October 18, 2018. Donna's life was characterized by her faith in Christ, service in her church, volunteer work, travel, Ohio State football, and devotion to her husband, children and family. She was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Edward James. She is survived by her daughter Betsy (James Schaaf Golik) (Michael); daughter-in-law Bonnie James; grandchildren Nicklaus James (Christina), Lauren Schaaf, David Schaaf (Madeline), Nicholas James, and great-grandchildren Brantley and Madison James.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Tryon Estates where Donna lived for the last 19 years,
