Obituary

Donald Edward Schweitzer, 73, originally of Winthrop, CT, passed away unexpectedly on March 16th, 2026 at his home in Tryon, NC. Donnie was born on June 13th, 1952 to Edward and Ruth (Kuraitis) Schweitzer. Donnie attended Valley Regional High School in Deep River, CT where he was an avid cross-country runner and basketball player and graduated in 1970 at the top of his class. He attended Clark University for several years as a Chemistry major before falling in love with the art of building. He opened up and maintained his own carpentry business for over 50 years.

Later in life, Donnie spent several years working as a hospice volunteer at Middlesex Hospice in Middletown, CT before moving to warmer weather in North Carolina. Providing care, compassion and support to persons at the end of life was near and dear to his heart. In his later years, he could be found in his workshop continuing to fulfill his love of designing and creating with building custom and unique wood pieces. Donnie was a devout Christian. He also had a passion for the South West, and a long term love/hate relationship with the New York Giants.

Donnie would say that his greatest accomplishment in life was being a proud father to his three children whom he leaves behind. Ethan Schweitzer of Brentwood, NH, Kate Bailey and her husband Peter of Derby, VT and Sarah Schweitzer and her fiancé Steven Patrick of Mill Spring, NC. He also absolutely adored his 5 grandchildren. Ethan Jr, Paisley, Chase, Bella and Mason were a highlight of his life. He was always inquiring as to what they were doing and sharing in their accomplishments.

In addition to his children and grandchildren, he leaves behind his beloved dog Lucy as well as many close friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 16th 2026 at the Winthrop Baptist Church, 444 Winthrop Rd, Deep River, CT, from 2- 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Breakthrough T1D (formerly Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation/JDRF), VRHS Trades Award, or a charity of your choice.
