Dennis Paul Townsend, 97, of Landrum, South Carolina, passed away on August 26, 2026, in Columbus, North Carolina.

Dennis was born May 7, 1929, in Pratt, West Virginia, to William M. Townsend and Gladys Fern Rutledge Townsend. His upbringing in rural West Virginia helped shape the determination, discipline, self-reliance, and remarkable work ethic that characterized his life.

He earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from West Virginia University in 1952. Following service in the United States Army, his career included work with the National Security Agency and General Electric’s Jet Engine Department before joining NASA’s Lewis Research Center in 1962. He retired in 1998 as a senior research engineer after more than 35 years with NASA.

Dennis became an internationally recognized authority in gears, bearings, transmissions, and related technologies. He authored or coauthored more than 130 technical publications and presented his research throughout the United States, Japan, Europe, and Australia. He served as chairman of the ASME Design Engineering Division and its Power Transmission and Gearing Committee, was named an ASME Fellow, and received NASA’s Medal for Exceptional Engineering Achievement in 1989. He also served as editor-in-chief of the second edition of the Dudley Gear Handbook. After retiring from NASA, he continued consulting for government, military, and industry well into his later years.

Above all, Dennis was devoted to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His faith was the foundation of his life. He possessed a deep knowledge of Scripture and served churches throughout his life as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, counselor, and volunteer. He was a member of Midway Baptist Church near Columbus, North Carolina. His favorite hymn was “How Great Thou Art,” particularly as sung by George Beverly Shea.

Dennis was a man of strong conviction, extraordinary determination, and quiet dependability. Even at 97, he remained remarkably independent and active, teaching Sunday school until just weeks before his death.

Dennis was the patriarch of the Townsend family—the person others turned to for knowledge, advice, and help because of his wisdom, reliability, and strength of character.

Dennis was married for 61 years to Doris Lee Hennen Townsend, who preceded him in death in 2012. He later married Mary Francise Townsend, who survives him.

He was the father of Debbie Mentler, Nancy Townsend, Holly Ouellette, the late Greg Townsend, and John Townsend; grandfather of Rachel, Amber, Matthew, Jason, Corey, Erin, and Reagan; and great-grandfather of Layla, Aela, Hudson, Camden, Aubrey, and Ethan.

Dennis was one of seven children and was the oldest surviving sibling at the time of his death.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at McFarland Funeral Chapel in Tryon, North Carolina.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson, South Carolina.
