MILL SPRING, NC - David Eugene "Gene" Green, 67, of Mill Spring, NC went home to be with the Lord, Sunday morning, October 19, 2014 at his home.Born in Polk County, NC, he was the son of the late Romey and Myrtle Davis Green. He was a graduate of Tryon High School and began his career at the A&P in Tryon at 15 years of age. He worked over the years at Smiths Supermarket and for the last 16 years at Quality Foods in Greer, SC. Mr. Green took great pride in providing fresh quality products to his customers for all occasions.Gene loved his church family where he was a member and past deacon of Beulah Baptist Church. He served his church over the years as Sunday School Director, teacher and choir member. Gene was also very active in his community serving as a Volunteer Fireman for 31 years with Columbus Fire Dept. He was named Fireman of the Year several times. Gene was a past PTA president, member of the Horse Creek Masonic Lodge and Columbus Town Council. He received several awards for service above self.Gene loved spending time with family and also loved the great outdoors, hunting, fishing, guns, cars and NASCAR racing.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son in 1971. Surviving is his wife of 48 years, Rebecca Gibbs Green; one daughter, Pamela G. Hyder (Kenneth) of Mill Spring, NC; one son, Darren Eugene Green (Vicki) of Columbus, NC; three grandchildren, Rebekah, Bethany Hyder and Chloe Green; one brother, Leon Green (Janice) of Mill Spring, NC; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Herbert and Betty Gibbs.A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2014 in Beulah Baptist Church, Mill Spring, NC with Dr. Joel Wright officiating.Burial will be in the church cemetery.The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.Memorials may be made to Beulah Baptist Church, 123 Beulah Church Lane, Tryon, NC 28782 or to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC 28722.
