Obituary

Tryon, NC - Clyde William Pittman, 92, of Miller Dr. Tryon, NC passed away January 5, 2014 at his home.Born in Polk County in 1921, he was the son of the late Arthur and Bertha Pittman. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army with Reconnaissance Company of the 654th Tank Destroyer Battalion in the European Theatre where he earned an Expert Marksman Medal with the SMG 45 Caliber. Clyde was a knitter at Adams Millis hosiery mill in Tryon for many years and was known for making homes and properties more beautiful with his skilled lawn and plant care. He was a member of the Congregational Church of Christ, Tryon, NC.Surviving are two daughters; Elaine Ashley (Larry) of Shelby, NC and Judy Cappelmann (J.C.) of St. Martin's; and one brother, Jack Pittman (Sue) of Dianna, TX. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Lance Ashley and Lana White of Shelby, NC; Samantha Morrison (Jud) of Houston, TX and Thomas Kell of Columbia, SC as well as five great-grandchildren: Anna, Callie, Ashley, Judson and Cooper. In addition to his parents, Clyde was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Margaret Pace Pittman who died in 2009; a brother Ned Pittman and sisters Evelyn Tate and Rachael Williams.A Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014 in the Congregational Church of Christ, Tryon, NC with Rev. Robert Barrows officiating.The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014 just prior to the service in the Congregational Church.Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, NC with military rites by the Polk Memorial Burial Squad.The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to sister-in-law Ruth Foy and caregiver Clara Kuykendall for all of their support and to the many volunteers who brought meals throughout the years.Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, 75 Carmel Lane, Columbus, NC 28722.
