Tryon, NC - Charles Guynell Smith, 72, of Meadowlark Drive, Tryon, NC died Monday, July 30, 2012 in Memorial Mission Hospital, Asheville, NC. Born in Spartanburg Co., SC, he was the son of Arvilla Settle Smith of Tryon, NC and the late Guynell Smith. A graduate of Tryon High School, Charles was known as a well respected businessman in Tryon. He owned and operated Smith's Gulf Service Station for approximately six years and later owned and operated Tryon Exxon Service Center for ten years. He was employed by Scott & Stringfellow Investors in Greenville, SC until his retirement in 2003. He was a member of the Polk County Jaycees, Tryon Lions Club, Dixie Vettes Corvette Club, Laurens, SC, and served on the Harmon Field Board for several years. He was a member of the Tryon First Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Emily Reneau Smith of the home, one daughter, Ann Smith Owen (James) of Rock Hill, SC, three brothers, Benny Smith and Kent Smith both of Tryon, NC, and Steve Smith of Cornelius, NC; three sisters, Peggy Smith of Spartanburg, SC, Nancy Ridings of Landrum, SC, and Lynn Greene of Tryon, NC. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held 12:00 pm Saturday, August 4th in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, NC with Rev. Andy Allen and Dr. Darryl E. Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, NC. Family to receive friends from 10:30 am to 11:45 am prior to the service in the McFarland Funeral Chapel.
