TRYON, NC -- Charles Kline Johnson, 94, of Greenstoke Loop, Tryon, NC died Friday, March 7, 2008 at his home. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, he attended the University of Pittsburgh, PA receiving a BS degree in business and was a Sigma Chi. In 1938, he married Gertrude " Betty" Lewis Johnson who died in 1996. Mr. Johnson entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and was a Lieutenant Armed Guard Gunnery Officer on convoy duty in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean areas. Later he was reassigned as a Naval Contract Disposal officer. Following discharge from the Navy, he went to work for DuPont in Wilmington, DE and became an Advertising Manager. He retired in 1976 to the Outer Banks, NC in Southern Shores. Mr. Johnson was involved in many civic activities and was a volunteer fire fighter. In 1984, he moved to Tryon and soon became involved with the Fine Arts Center as a board member and a member of theater set construction crew and with the Tryon Arts and Crafts as a silversmith. Also he was a 1000-hour volunteer with St. Luke's Hospital Courier Service and was a member of the Tryon Presbyterian Church, Tryon, NC. In 1998, he married Ann Belford and lived happily ever after.Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Sarah J. Pray of Dearborn, MI, Caroline J. Antonuccio of Minneapolis, MN, and Susan J. Saraca of East Walpole, MA; one son, Stephen H. Johnson of Hazlehurst, GA. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.Memorial services will be held at a later date.Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Building 1, Asheville, NC 28801.
