Tryon, NC - Carl Frederick Hammond, 81, formerly of Chillicothe and Elmhurst, Ill., died Sunday, October 10, 2010 in St. Luke's Hospital, Columbus, NC.Born in Columbus, OH, he was the son of the late Carl F., Sr. and Marguerite Ranbarger Hammond. He was a Veteran of the U. S. Marines for 4 years having served in the Korean Conflict. Carl spent his working life as an engineer with the Santa Fe and Chicago Northwest Railways in California and Illinois and was a part-owner and manager of Shakey's Pizza Parlor in San Jose, CA for 3 years, where he resided in Los Gatos, CA. Mr. and Mrs. Hammond retired to Tryon, NC in 1991 coming from Elmhurst, Ill for a more quite life. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Faith Barrett Hammond; a sister, Effie Steed of Justice, IL and 5 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Hammond.No services are planned.
