Columbus, NC - Calvin Gibbs, 88, of 486 Bill Collins Rd., died Monday, October 29, 2007 in Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.Born in Polk County, NC, he was the son of the late Calloway Burgan and Florence Jackson Gibbs and widower of Nellie Weaver Gibbs who died in May of 2007 after 56 years of marriage. Mr. Gibbs retired from Hatch Mill, Columbus, NC and was a member of Coopers Gap Baptist Church, Mill Spring, NC.Surviving include three sons, Jerry Gibbs of Rutherfordton, NC, Arnold Gibbs of Mill Spring, NC, and Dean Gibbs of Asheville, NC; two daughters, Brenda Pike of Columbus, NC and Phyllis Justus of Hendersonville, NC. Two brothers, Herbert Gibbs of Mill Spring, NC and John Gibbs of Columbus, NC. One sister, Alva Gibbs of Columbus, NC. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Patti Gibbs.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 1, 2007 in Coopers Gap Baptist Church in Mill Spring, NC with Rev. Brian Wilson and Rev. Joe Saunders officiating.Burial will be in Coopers Gap Baptist Church.The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Coopers Gap Baptist Church.The family will be at the home, 486 Bill Collins Rd., Columbus, NC.
