MILL SPRING, NC - Sheriff Boyce Lee Carswell, 83, of Mill Spring, NC died Thursday, October 04, 2007 in Hospice House of Rutherford County in Forest City, NC. Born in Polk County, NC, he was the son of the late James Esper and Minnie Fowler Carswell. Mr. Carswell was first married to the late Jeanette Halford Carswell who died in 1993. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Carswell served as Polk County Sheriff for 24 years before retiring in 1998 and was a member of the N.C. Sheriff's Association. He was a life-long member of the Polk County Democrat Party. Mr. Carswell was a life-long member of Pea Ridge Baptist Church, Mill Spring, NC. Surviving are: his wife, Betty Brown Carswell; one son, Michael Carswell and wife, Peggy of Landrum, SC; two daughters, Sarah Garrett and husband, Ray of Mill Spring, NC and Helen Price and husband, Pete of Pea Ridge, NC; two step-sons, Steven Cogdill and Chris Cogdill; one step-daughter, Glenda Cartee; one brother, Buster Carswell of Mill Spring, NC; four sisters, Catherine Phillips of Mill Spring, NC, Vivian Blackmon of Lake Norman, NC, Mabel Page of Mill Spring, NC and Jean Griffie of Columbus, NC. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Buren and Leo Carswell. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 6, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, NC with Rev. John Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Pea Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Mill Spring, NC with Military graveside rites conducted by the Polk County Memorial Burial Squad and the Henderson County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00 until 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
