Obituary

BETTIE F. WISHMEIER

Bettie F. Wishmeier, age 84, a resident of Morgan Chapel Village in Columbus, North Carolina, since 1982, passed away on May 25, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville after complications developed while she was in intensive care following surgery.

Born in Washington, D.C., Bettie grew up in Milton, Massachusetts, and began her career as a legal secretary. During World War II, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served at the Third Naval District in New York City, where she was assigned to Naval Intelligence.

While in Washington during the war, she met her future husband, Robert Wishmeier, a Marine Corps navigation instructor stationed at Quantico, Virginia. They were married in Boston in 1945 and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on January 14, 2005.

Before moving to Columbus, Bettie lived in Northbrook, Illinois. She was an active community volunteer and fundraiser and was later appointed as a Trustee of Skokie Valley Community Hospital. After relocating to North Carolina, she continued to support her community, although St. Luke’s Hospital did not have an active fundraising organization during her years there.

Bettie is survived by her daughter, Nancy Wishmeier, of New York.

The family extends sincere thanks to Mandy Whiteside for posting this remembrance in honor of Bettie Wishmeier.
