Obituary

Anne Johnson Boyd Dunlap was born in Columbia, South Carolina, on November 15, 1936, and died at home in Columbus, North Carolina, on January 15, 2019. After attending public schools in her home town, she studied for two years at Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia, and, in 1959, graduated with a B.A. degree from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. She taught high school in Columbia for several years and subsequently worked in banking in New York City before marrying Benjamin Bernard ("Bernie") Dunlap, whereupon she taught again in Cambridge and Brookline, Massachusetts.During 55 years of marriage, she and her husband raised their three children primarily in South Carolina and, for several years, in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Thailand. In recent decades, she traveled widely around the world, participating in numerous meetings of the Waters Global Forum. She was raised an Episcopalian in Columbia and was a member of The Assembly, The Thursday Study Club, and The New Century Club. In Spartanburg, where she served as first lady during her husband's 13 years as President of Wofford College, she also belonged to The Second Tuesday Book Club and The Wednesday Study Club.The daughter of William Clarence Boyd, Jr., and Frances Ancrum Boykin Boyd, she is survived by her husband; their three children—Frances Boykin Dunlap Bell (Gregory Fred) of Chapel Hill, N.C.; Susannah Beverley Dunlap (Suzanne VanSlyke Walker) of Lopez Island, Washington; and Benjamin Witherspoon Dunlap (Jamie Mae Newnam) of Chapel Hill, N.C., as well as by grandchildren Jones Kaiser Bell, Alexander Boykin Bell, Boyd Bernard Dunlap, Mae Adele Dunlap (all of Chapel Hill), and Bevan Zeke Herrmann-Bell (Anis Allagui) of Sharjah, U.A.E., along with one great-grandchild, Idris Zeke Allagui; and by her brother in Columbia, William Clarence Boyd III and his wife Erwin Parrott Boyd.Burial will be private, but her family will receive friends at a time and place to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Gibbs Cancer Center at Spartanburg Regional Hospital, Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, or the Dunlap Chamber Music Series Endowment at Wofford College.
