Alexander Smith Morrison, IV of Columbus, NC passed away, Saturday evening, Febraury 10, 2018 at his home.Born in Hartsville, SC, he was the son of Archie and Willie Morrison of Hartsville, SC. Alex graduated from Georgia Military Academy in 1953, where he was on the swim team and an All American diver. He attended North Carolina State College for two years and pledged Kappa Alpha Order fraternity, maintaining lifelong KA friendships. As a junior, Alex transferred to Clemson University from which he graduated in 1958. While at Clemson, Alex was a member of the Pershing Rifles and president of the Central Dance Association. He was a lifetime donor to IPTAY and remained a loyal Tiger fan throughout his life.Alex served eight years in the Air National Guard and was on active duty during the Berlin Crisis. Upon returning to Hartsville, Alex was vice president of Morrison Oil Company and president of Gas Marts Inc.In 1994, Alex and his wife moved to Palm Coast, Fla., where he enjoyed fishing and made many friends, often playing his guitar and singing at gatherings. In 1994, Alex was named a Living Legend by the Sand Flea Association of Myrtle Beach. Alex is survived by his wife of 27 years, Peggie Moore Morrison; his children, Alexander Morrison V (Carlin), Harris Morrison, Elizabeth White and Greer Morrison (Don); and stepson Allen Wilson. He has three grandsons, Mac Berg, Joe White and Alex Morrison; and a sister, Martha Sweeney. He is preceded in death by son Robert Morrison and brothers Tommy and Steve Morrison.Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock on Saturday, February 17, 2018, in The First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Dan Sansbury will officiate with burial to follow in Magnolia Cemetery.
