Tryon, NC - Adella Dempsey Ballew, 89, of Tryon, NC passed away Friday, October 24, 2008 in St. Luke's Hospital in Columbus, NC. A native of Spartanburg County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Edward Austin and Ila Moore Dempsey. She was the wife of the late Hubert T. Ballew who died in 1989. She was the owner and operator of Iredell Beauty Shop in Landrum, SC for over sixty years. She was a long-time member of her beloved Tryon First Baptist Church where she was actively involved in many church organizations and committees.She is survived by a special nephew, Hub Arledge (Joyce) and family of Tryon, NC; a niece Barbara Mishoe of Charlotte, NC, nephews, Marshall Ballew of Johnson City, TN, Bob Dempsey of Asheville, NC, A. G. Dempsey of Taylors, SC, Jerry Dempsey Greenville, SC and great-niece Vicki Hamrick of Boiling Springs, SC; special friends Irene and Bobby Settle of Landrum, SC. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Thurman Dempsey, Nathan Dempsey, Gerald Dempsey and B.B. Dempsey, and two sisters, Mae Alverson Bridges and Irene Ferrell.Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon October 26, 2008 in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, NC with Dr. Bill Henderson and Phil Scoggins officiating.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tryon First Baptist Church Scholarship Fund or to the Activity Building Fund, P. O. Box 1287, Tryon, NC 28782.The family is at the home of Hub and Joyce Arledge, 1440 Hogback Mountain Road, Tryon, NC.
